Lahaina is the second most visited destination in Maui, next only to the beaches. The atmosphere in thi census-designated place is as electric as you can expect from a tourist town in Hawaii. Lahaina boasts a stunning oceanfront, a plethora of shops, famous restaurants and luaus, and a hopping nightlife. Beneath the undeniable resort and vacation town vibe, however, are layers of history and culture just waiting to be explored.
Lahaina was the capital of the unified Hawaiian Kingdom from 1820 to 1845 and welcomed some of Hawaii’s earliest missionaries. In the mid-1800s, it transformed into a rowdy and colorful whaling village in an era peppered by drinking binges, sailor riots and conflicts between whalers and Christian missionaries. This infamous episode in Lahaina’s history has proven to be a defining one, giving birth to the town’s enduring legacy as a buzzing nightlife destination.
Lahaina is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Front Street, the town’s famous main street, boasts 2-story buildings from the 1800s to the early 1900s that once served as homes of missionaries, hospitals, prison houses, and early hotels.
In addition to a rich history, Lahaina also has a thriving art scene. There are plenty of art galleries, ranging from branches of cosmopolitan establishments to local ones.
And as in any other popular Hawaiian destination, a Lahaina vacation means endless beach adventures. The town is a gateway to the highly popular Kaanapali and Kapalua beach resorts – Maui’s signature beach destinations – where sun and surf are plentiful.
Lahaina never runs out of surprises for visitors and residents – truly deserving of the distinction, “the jewel in the crown of Maui.”
